Olives & Pickles Organic Teether Review and Giveaway

Kaya was recently sent an adorable organic baby teether to review from Olives & Pickles, and I do believe she likes it.  With a wooden ring to hold on to (or chew on), soft fabric bunny ears that crinkle, and the cute design, it has easily become her favorite toy.

I'll put Kaya on her belly for tummy time, and if this teether is anywhere within reach, she will roll, scoot, and stretch until she gets her little hands around the ring.  She loves to chew on the bunny ears and laughs so sweet when she hears the crinkling sound coming from her mouth.

That's why she likes it, but why does this Momma approve?  The fabric easily comes off of the ring, making for easy cleaning.  The wooden teether is made with 100% untreated solid Beech wood, polished smooth. It is not treated with any oil, wax or ink, so I don't have to worry about what chemicals are going into her mouth.

From their website: "A natural alternative to plastic teethers, Olives & Pickles Organic Plush Wooden Teether provides both a soft and hard surface for baby to cut new teeth on and soothe the pain in their gums."

A few of their other products include:

Sucking Pad with Taggie
Organic Plush Bear- Jacques with blankie
Wooden Teether – Elephant Louise

Disclosure: I was given the above mentioned product in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own.

The great people at Olives & Pickles are offering you, my readers, a giveaway!

MonkiSee DVD Collection: Review

The MonkiSee DVD Collection includes all seven titles in the series.  These super fun and entertaining DVDs teach babies and young children first words, colors, shapes, animals, actions, the alphabet and more through the use of silly and lovable puppets, poetry, and music.  MonkiSee is so entertaining that children don't even realize they are learning while they watch it.  Each video has a runtime of approximately 30 minutes.

Baby's First Words
All About Colors
All About Shapes
Around the House
Action Words
Animals At the Farm
ABC Roundup

Sammy loves monkeys, and this fun collection keeps him dancing, moving, and talking the whole time he's watching.  He's learning so much from watching the other kids and monkeys on the show, and it goes much smoother than when I'm trying to teach him how to do something.

From Intellectual Baby, the MonkiSee DVDs will help teach your little one to read and recognize things from colors to actions.  At $89.99, the MonkiSee Video Collection is a great way to help give your child an extra boost in learning!

From their site:
Recent studies show that babies enter a critical period of learning from birth to about 5 years of age.  This time-period is a unique "window of opportunity" to establish a firm foundation for their future.
Research shows that a one year old will learn twice as fast as a three year old.
Intellectual Baby products are guaranteed to make teaching your baby easy, effective and fun.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Wordless Wednesday

Well, I guess it's not exactly wordless, but that is the exciting part.  Instead of sharing pictures today, I wanted to share with you all a video of my little guy saying a few of his favorite words.  From having a vocabulary of less than 20 words about six months ago, he has truly shown amazing progress.  So here he is, at 2.5 years, talking to you guys.  Hope you enjoy!

Zopheez One Piece Baby Outfits {Review}

Zopheez was created by Kerry Newman, a board certified pediatrician and mother of three.  After seeing parents and other caretakers struggle to dress and change babies, she took it upon herself to design an outfit that was a "safe, stylish and easy option for dressing young babies and toddlers."  Zopheez clothing are easy to put on, easy to take off, and all provide easy access for quick diaper changes.

Zopheez are jumpsuits for babies and toddlers – but they look like an entire outfit. They have one zip down the front, and another at the legs for easy diaper changes.  No more shirts riding up, pants falling down, or skirts getting twisted.

Summer Infant MultiView Baby Monitor Review

When Sammy was a baby, we invested in a generic audio baby monitor for his room.  Being the paranoid helicopter momma that I am, every little sound resulted in me dashing from bed to check on him.  The majority of the time, he was perfectly fine and sound asleep - until I opened the door and woke him up, that is.  He never really learned how to self-soothe, and more than two years later he still has trouble sleeping through the night - seeking me out as soon as he wakes up.

Enter Summer Infant's Multi View Digital Color Video Monitor Set.  The wonderful people at Summer Infant sent me this monitor to review for you all, and I am thoroughly impressed.  This fantastic monitor has so many great features that I have no idea why we didn't invest in this a long time ago.

Reducing SIDS with HALO ~ a Review

A parent's worst nightmare is the thought of losing one of their children.  Fortunately, there are many ways to reduce the chance of SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.  Because SIDS happens most often when a baby is sleeping, it is extremely important to follow these tips for safer sleep.

Safe Sleep Practices
  • Place baby to sleep on his or her back at naptime and at night time.
  • Use a crib that meets current safety standards with a firm mattress that fits snuggly and is covered with only a tight-fitting crib sheet.
  • Remove all soft bedding and toys from your baby’s sleep area (this includes loose blankets, bumpers, pillows and positioners). The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests using a wearable blanket instead of loose blankets to keep your baby warm.
  • Offer a pacifier when putting baby to sleep. If breastfeeding, introduce pacifier after one month or after breastfeeding has been established.
  • Breastfeed, if possible, but when finished, put your baby back to sleep in his or her separate safe sleep area alongside your bed.

  • Never put your baby to sleep on any soft surface
  • Never dress your baby too warmly for sleep; keep room temperature 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Never allow anyone to smoke around your baby or take your baby into a room or car where someone has recently smoked.

HALO, the makers of the original SleepSack, has a new line of Micro Fleece SleepSacks!

Infant CPR Basics: What Every Parent Should Know

In honor of SIDS Awareness month, I want to share with you my biggest fear.  I am absolutely terrified that I will wake up in the middle of the night to one of my babies not breathing.  I know I am not alone in this, as every parents' nightmare is losing a child.  Do you know what to do if, Heaven forbid, your little one stops breathing?

Infant CPR

*If you are alone with the child, perform CPR for 2 minutes, and then call 911.*

Check breathing

If the child is not breathing (or is breathing irregularly) sweep their mouths for any foreign object and position them on their back.

Begin chest compressions

Using two or three fingers in the center of the baby's chest, just below nipple-level, give 30 compressions at a rate of 100 per minute.

Don't know how fast 100 beats per minute is?  Here is a list of songs with a tempo of 100 BMP to help you remember the speed of compressions:

Songs that can save a life

99 Red Balloons by Nena
Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Diana Ross
Hey There Delilah by Plain White T's
I Want You To Want Me by Letters To Cleo
Accidentally In Love by Counting Crows
All You Need Is Love by The Beatles
Back in Black by AC/DC
Born to Be Wild by Steppenwolf
Walking On Sunshine by Jump5

Give 2 gentle breaths

Slightly lift the infant's chin so that the airway is open and cover their mouth and nose with your mouth.  Give 2 slow breaths, each one lasting a second.  You should be able to see the chest rise with each breath.

Continue with 30 compressions and two breaths until help arrives.

I Can't Complain

You know, it isn't often that I’m able to sit back and reflect on life.  Tonight, both kids fell asleep early so I was able to just relax and think for a while, and the verdict is – I've got it pretty good.

I have two beautiful children, I am pursuing an education toward a career that I am passionate about, my fiance and I have a great relationship, and we have everything that we need.

I know I may complain at times about being tired – but my kids are well taken care of.

I may complain about all the housework – but I have a home that I love being in.

I may complain about not having time to cook – but we eat well.

The truth is: I have no reason to complain at all.  There are so many less fortunate than my family.  We aren’t living in luxury; we’re actually below poverty as far as money goes.  But we have what we need, and that is all that matters.

There are times that I have stood in the line at a food bank to ensure that we had enough food to last through the week.  There are times when we've has to count change for diapers.  Even through that – we still have what we need.

Will we have a big Christmas?  Probably not.  But we will still celebrate.  Same goes for Sammy’s birthday, which is two days after Christmas.   There will be a party to commemorate him turning three, but I can’t promise lavish gifts.

We have what we need.  Our kids have food – even if it isn't what they may want to eat.  They have clean clothes without holes or stains – even if they were bought from a thrift store.  They might not have the latest gadgets or toys- but they have a roof over their heads, running water, warmth when it’s cold, and a clean house.

Most importantly, they have love.  We don’t fight, argue, or yell.  We try our hardest to be good examples to our little ones.  We teach them, hold their hands, and rock them to sleep.  Through the boo-boos, nightmares, tummy aches, and hurt feelings – we give them the love that only a parent can.  We’re rewarded with sweet hugs, kisses, snuggles, and trust – more precious than the finest jewels.

Next time you’re having a bad day, spend a few minutes to reflect on your life.  Perhaps it isn’t so bad after all.
