Real Mom Moments: BMN Contently Creative Blog Hop

This week I am so excited to be co-hosting the Blogging Mamas Network's Contently Creative Blog Hop!  The topic for this week's link-up is "Real Mom Moments" and I would love to read all of your stories.

What are "Real Mom Moments"?  Well, you know when your two-year-old broke down and threw a tantrum in the middle of the grocery store last week and you wanted to crawl into one of the freezers and hide?  Or how you stuck your keys in the fridge and spent an hour looking for them when you were pregnant?  Or even that time you felt so overwhelmed with the amount of love you feel for your children that you simply sat down and cried?  That's what being a mom is like.  The ups, the downs, the crazy hectic wanna-tear-your hair out moments that every mom feels at one point or another.

So come link up your stories.  Whether they're old, or something you were just inspired to write about, I want to read it! Share with us one of YOUR posts in the linky below!   Whether you’re sharing a story about a special Real Mom Moment, a super funny Real Mom Moment Story, super personal post, or a picture of one of your favorite Real Mom Moments… anything!  Let’s get Contently Creative!

(Book) How to Discipline Kids without Losing their Love and Respect: Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

You may remember me writing about how I've had some difficulty with my 3 year old, trying to figure out how to discipline him without spanking him while still getting him to listen to me.  Well, this book by Jim Fay teaches about the Love and Logic method of discipline - a way of connecting with your children and teaching them to understand what you are saying without screaming at them.

Respect is a two-way street, and you have to show a certain amount of it to your children if you want to receive it.  Love, that one is self-explanatory.  You love your children, so why not incorporate that love into a mutual understanding that can make everyone happy.

There are two rules to Love and Logic.  The first is for adults to take good care of themselves by setting limits without anger, lectures, threats, or repeated warnings.  The second is when a child causes a problem, the adult hands it back in loving ways.  So what does that mean?  Hold your child accountable for his or her actions, but show them what you would rather they do without nagging them.

Seems almost impossible, right?  That's why I like this book.  It gives you detailed scenarios of how to rephrase your intentions - from "fighting words" to "thinking words", or enforceable statements.  My favorite example here was to change the phrase, "Don't talk to me in that tone of voice!" to "I'll listen as soon as your voice is as calm as mine."  Can you see what a difference that can make?

I'm so excited to have this book; I plan on using the tips and examples to see what a difference it can make with my parenting.

Awesome St. Patrick's Day Shirts: Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial. is the place to shop for great St. Patty's Day shirts.  I'm Irish, so of course I want to show off my green side when St. Patrick's Day comes around.  I love searching for funny T-shirts to show off my weird sense of humor, and these capture it perfectly.

I chose an awesome suspender tee that reminds me of Shenanigan's (movie reference!) and was surprised by how soft it is.  Ultra-thin but not in that low-quality see-through way, this t-shirt is form fitting and looks great on.  The colors are bright and didn't fade when washed, like so many colorful shirts do.

At $18.99, these shirts seem a little pricey, but are definitely high-quality so I can see where the price comes from.  The picture above shows me wearing it after washing it twice (I kept forgetting to take pictures for the review when I would wear it out!) so you can see how bright the colors are.

After School Specials: Super Snack Ideas for Healthy, Happy Kids {Guest Post}

When kids get home from school, they’re a few hours past lunch time, hungry and needing a snack to tide them over until dinner. But chips, crackers and other simple carbohydrates can be a waste of calories that could have instead provided growing children with the vitamins and minerals they need to stay healthy and strong. So what’s the solution? Healthy snacks, of course. By feeding kids the right foods after school, you can make sure that every calorie counts; and when snacks are properly prepared, even the pickiest little one will eat fruits and vegetables instead of empty starches. Below are some creative ways to make good nutrition tasty and appealing so kids will snack on real food instead of junk.

  1. Freeze the Fruit— Dieting women have known for years that frozen grapes make a refreshing, low-fat replacement for ice cream, but any fruit can be frozen if your children like cold treats. Mangoes, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, bananas and peaches can all be frozen to create a healthy snack that tastes great with a dollop of Greek yogurt for added protein. If you have a high-power blender, frozen bananas can be turned into a treat with a surprisingly similar texture to soft serve ice cream, with peanut butter, cocoa powder, assorted fruits or other natural flavors added if desired.
  2. Prep the Veggies— Often, we have the celery, carrot sticks, fresh broccoli and cauliflower sitting in the refrigerator drawer, waiting to be used, but we forget to prepare it in time for snacks. Rather than waiting until you have hungry children clamoring at your feet, cut up fresh vegetables during the day and place them in a sealed container with a bit of cold water to retain moisture. When kids get home from school, instead of grabbing salty, processed nibbles, you can give freshly sliced vegetables with ranch dip or hummus to snack on.
  3. Find the Fruit Bowl— This seems like an obvious, classic way to promote healthful eating, and many of us grew up with a bowl of fruit on the table for quick snacking. But our world has become much more convenience-minded in the last few decades, making many reach for chips, crackers and other processed junk foods instead of that good old apple we used to enjoy. To get back into this great habit, buy apples, oranges, nectarines, peaches, bananas and other kid-friendly foods, wash and dry so they’re ready to eat, and keep the bowl within constant reach of little hands. Children don’t get to control much in their lives, and being given the option to grab something from the fruit bowl whenever they want will make them happy. And if they lose their appetite for dinner because they had too much fruit… is that really a bad thing?

Losing It as a Mom

I don't post much about my personal life here - just the snippets that go along with my parenting stories or reviews.  So forgive me if this may seem a little raw for your tastes, if bare-your-soul-honesty is not for you...

But I think I'm losing it.  I'm exhausted: physically, emotionally, and mentally.  I want to scream, kick, cry... I want to throw that tantrum that I worked so hard to keep my three year old from pitching in the backseat of the car while I was trying to drive.  I want to curl up in a ball and pretend that the world doesn't exist - for just a little while!

And I feel so guilty for thinking this way.  After all, how can I possibly have it any worse than any other mom out there?  I get seven hours a day to myself.  The kids go to daycare until 3, the fiance is at work until 6... I get to focus on my school work and get the house clean and sometimes even indulge in a little Netflix before having to pick the little ones back up.

After all that peace and quiet though, and only for the last week or two, at 3:00pm - the urge to run away comes back.  I have a ten-month old who just had six (yes, six) teeth come in all at once.  Never mind the ear infection that she's been battling for the last 3 weeks.  Add that to the separation anxiety phase, and I'm stuck with a baby on my hip for the rest of the evening.  That's just the baby.  The three-year old is going through some kind of mean streak, where if by chance I'm able to set my baby girl down, he'll come over and kick her - just to make her cry I think.  Then I have to run back and scoop her up again, and attempt to discipline my toddler without causing him to have an emotional breakdown too.

Then, at 3:30, the step-daughter walks in the door.  I never knew a seven-year-old could be so ornery, so difficult... We've butted heads for as long as I've been a part of her life (the last 4 years) and there really isn't any way to connect with her because she's had it drilled into her head by the other family that she doesn't have to listen to me.  She's having some difficulty paying attention and doing her work in school right now, and I'm fairly certain she has ADHD - but the "other family" is in denial and refuses to let her get treatment or counseling.

And then there's me.  Sitting on the floor protecting my baby, comforting my toddler, and attempting to connect with my step-daughter, all while fighting the thoughts racing through my head that I DONT WANT TO BE HERE.

I didn't have postpartum depression after having either of my children.  I love them more than life itself, and I haven't started neglecting any of my parenting duties... but man, I can't get rid of these feelings of absolute overload from the minute I see their faces.

Please tell me I'm not alone.  Have you ever experienced this utter despair when it comes to parenting?

eBook Review: Money Making Mamas by Lisa Kroulik

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Are you a mama that wants to be able to stay at home with your little ones but still earn an income?  Well, thanks to Lisa Kroulik, you can now have the resources to quit your job and make money from home.

In this book, Money Making Mamas: Ditch Your Boss, Stay Home & Earn a Decent Income Working Online, the author gives detailed step-by-step instructions for earning real money without having to get out of your pajamas in the morning.  From affiliate marketing how-to and making money writing online, to getting started with data entry or medical transcription, she covers so much in a fast-paced, easy to read eBook that will have you ready to kick your old job to the curb!

A freelance writer and an entrepreneur at heart, Lisa Kroulik definitely wrote this book as an experienced stay-at-home mom.  Before she discovered her niche for writing self-help and how-to books, Lisa worked from home as an affiliate marketer, online seller, and a virtual assistant. She has worked at home for most of the past twelve years, giving her the knowledge and expertise to write a book to answer the question, "How do you do it?"

In the first chapter, she completely covers how to set up your own home office, how to create a Paypal account, and what you need to know about taxes if you work from home.  Most of this was stuff I already knew, as I've been working from home for about a year now.  I think it would be absolutely great for someone who is just starting out though!

In the next five chapters, however, the author has a way of telling you exactly what you need to do in order to make money from home.  I'm talking about sharing some of her favorite websites to make money from - like Textbroker and oDesk - and walking you through everything from creating your profile to getting paid. She even breaks down search engine optimization (SEO) and affiliate marketing so you will not only understand the concepts, but also be able to utilize the information into actual money making success!

I feel that this book is a fantastic resource - not only for moms who are dreaming about making money from home, but even for seasoned bloggers and other WAHMs trying to make a living through their computer.

You can find this eBook on Amazon for $3.99.  A small investment for a great income potential!

Safety? There's an App for That! React Mobile Safety App #Review

This was brought to you by and React Mobile.

Have you heard about the new, free app, React Mobile?  It's a safety mobile app designed to be a lifeline straight from your smartphone.

I have panic disorder.  I am forever worried that something will happen to me when I'm not at home, and no one will know because I can't get ahold of them.  Maybe that's a bit crazy of me, but think about it.  If you're walking home from the gym one day and someone snatches you and pulls you into an alley - what are you going to do?  You can yell for help, but what if no one is around?   If you had the React Mobile security app, you could simply press the SOS button and alert everyone in your emergency network, including loved ones and/or the authorities.

React Mobile Personal Safety App from Robb on Vimeo.

With an integrated GPS tracking system, you can enable the Follow Me feature to let trusted loved ones know your whereabouts.  This is a low-key way of letting them make sure that you are where you should be. I would use this feature any time I had to go somewhere that made me nervous, especially when I have to bring the little ones out of town for doctor appointments.  You can easily toggle this feature on and off, so the people in your network are only getting updates when you need them to.
I love the I'm Safe button that lets you quickly know your friends and family that nothing is wrong.  Much easier than my method of calling to check in every so often.
With Group SMS, you have the ability to instantly text, email, and Facebook when you’re in trouble or scared.  They’ll get a link to your location, as well.
The SOS Shield is a way for you to alert everyone, including emergency personnel, that there is an emergency and they will automatically receive a panic alert with your GPS location.

My thoughts
For a mom on the go, a college student, or children, this app is a perfect way to ensure your own safety, or the safety of your loved ones.  When my step-daughter gets older, I would definitely make sure this was installed on her phone so I know that she's safe.  I honestly think that this is something everyone should have!

Chicago-Style Italian Beef Recipe

I live in North Carolina.  In the mountains.  In a tiny town where "Southern Home Cooking" is the only food available in restaurants.  Being from Illinois, I miss the good Greek restaurants with gyros and Italian Beef...

Like Portillo's.  OMG they make the best Italian Beef sandwiches... Or Al's?  If you're from Chicago, you know what I'm talking about. There's nothing like that around here.  So when I was pregnant with Kaya and craving an absolutely northern meal, I played around until I got the recipe almost exact - this is one of the best Italian Beef recipes out there, and I'm sharing it with you!

Hyland's Baby Review

Thanks to Hyland's Baby for providing their Teething Tablets and Infant Earache Drops for this review!

I've mentioned before - Kaya is a horrible teether.  There is no making this kid happy with cold teething rings, wet washcloths, or massaging her gums.  I'm pretty sure that she is possessed with some unholy demon every time a new tooth is trying to break through.  We're talking tears, screaming... sooo many nights have been spent with me pacing around the house, doing the "shh shh" bounce.

Thank goodness for Hyland's Baby Teething Tablets.  I know my baby girl is in pain, and it kills me to see her crying.  I'm scared to give her too much acetaminophen or ibuprofen, because she is so little and I don't want to damage her liver.  As a momma, it's my job to worry about what kind of ingredients my little ones are exposed to.  That's why I turn to Hyland's Baby homeopatic products first for any kind of small ailment like teething, earaches, or colds.  In my experience, I've found that nothing gets a baby back to their smiling, happy self as quickly or safely as Hyland's Baby products.

My Son Plays with Dolls: Why I Hate Gender Specific Kids' Toys

I was browsing through my facebook feed a couple of days ago and saw this letter written by a 7 year old girl to the Lego company.  In it, she talks about how unfair it is that toys for boys always seem to be more imaginative and adventerous compared the the female-targeted counter-parts:

Viral Photo from a 7 Year Old to Lego about gender inequality
Dear Lego company:
My name is Charlotte. I am 7 years old and I love legos but I don’t like that there are more Lego boy people and barely any Lego girls.
Today I went to a store and saw legos in two sections the girls pink and the boys blue. All the girls did was sit at home, go to the beach, and shop, and they had no jobs but the boys went on adventures, worked, saved people, and had jobs, even swam with sharks.
I want you to make more Lego girl people and let them go on adventures and have fun ok!?!
Thank you.
From Charlotte.
Way to go, Charlotte!  This brings up a whole slew of thoughts for me on gender inequality when it comes to kids.  Why cant girls have jobs and go on adventures? And no, I'm not singling out Lego, but the majority of toy companies out there. Seriously - who decided that girls only want to play with make-up and dolls, but boys get all kinds of awesomely fun imaginative toys?  Case in point:  right now, the top rated "girl's" toy on is the Little Tikes Cupcake Kitchen.  For boys? A Wooden Activity Table with 45-Piece Train Set.

Simple Orange Cream Cake Recipe

Simple Orange Cream Cake that Everyone will love

Last month, we had a family dinner over at Matt's mom's house.  When I asked what we should bring, she just told me, "a dessert."  Of course, these are my in-laws (or will be one day) so I wanted to make something that would impress everyone.  But, I have two little ones always hanging off of me so baking for hours and hours is out of the question.  I settled on one of my family's favorites, an orange cream cake.  Everyone loved it, and Matt's brother even asked for the recipe!  I love that it's simple to make, using boxed cake mix with a few extra ingredients... plus, it's delicious!
