Review of Martin Chitwood's The Influence of the English Common Law on the Law of the Commonwealth of West Africa

I know I don't often write book reviews, but I was offered compensation to share with my readers this new book by Martin Chitwood, The Influence of The English Common Law on the Law of Commonwealth West Africa.  I know that it doesn't really fit into my normal parenting topics and reviews, but after browsing through it for a couple of minutes I realized that it's an interesting read.

Well written with incredibly detailed research, The Influence of the English Common Law on the Law of Commonwealth West Africa shows how British subjects shaped the laws of a newly partitioned West Africa through common laws of England. Martin Chitwood's book is a great resource for those delving into the history of legal systems for West Africa, as well as anyone wanting to learn how any legal system can be changed through incoming influences.

Martin Chitwood, Partner at Chitwood Harley Harnes LLP, has served as lead or co-lead counsel in more than 40 class actions nationwide and has been instrumental in recovering billions of dollars for investors and other class members.  He’s considered the plaintiffs’ lawyer in the state of Georgia.  He has also been recognized as a Georgia “Super Lawyer” by Law and Politics each year since the inception of the award.

How Spending Money Can Save You Money

Spending to save sounds a little odd, right? However, if you’re savvy, it can really work.

If you are the type of person or family who spends a lot of time indoors, you might as well equip yourself with suitable indoor entertainment! There is no point investing in a porch-swing if you only get a handful of sunny days each summer, for example. Instead, look at the household items and devices you often use, and consider upgrading or changing them.

One such device to consider is the television. If you tend to watch TV every night, it doesn’t make much sense to have only the most basic package. There are so many TV channels out there these days. You could be missing out on your new favourite show without even knowing about it! You can also upgrade the quality. Colour TV’s are no longer an exciting thing. Now it’s all about High-Definition! But if you have a TV set that supports HD, but no HD channels? Again, that doesn’t really make much sense.

To stretch your money further, consider combining your TV, phone and internet package into one. This could have lots of benefits. For example, you won’t have as many bills to deal with each month. Companies that offer packages bundling together all three are often super competitive with each other. While not so great for them, that means great news for us. Why? Because they have to make their prices affordable. They also often throw in little extras to make their package stand out amongst the others. This might mean access to movie channels or include the ability to call other countries. In turn, this can trickle down to help you make savings in other areas of your life.

You could save money on movie rentals, cinema trips and calling family and friends abroad. You might also be less inclined to leave the house, instead content to stay in and enjoy your faster internet, or new channels. This too could save you money on even basic things, like fuel.

You can check availability of Time Warner Cable Packages in your area, for example, nice and quick. This way you know your options, know what is and what isn’t available to you. The colder months are a sensible time to invest too, as you will likely be spending even more time inside.

On the topic of mobile phones, this too is another area where spending could mean saving. Once again, company competition is rife. This means that with a bit of careful digging, you might be able to change mobile provider and get something free. This is especially useful if the free item is something you needed anyway, like a laptop or shopping vouchers.

Next, think about the food and drink that you regularly consume. Always buying coffee on the way to work? This report suggests the average American spends $14.40 a week on the stuff. Investing in a good quality coffee machine means an initial outlay but an eventual saving. Similarly, for the health savvy amongst us, making your own smoothies does mean you need to buy the ingredients and equipment. However, this is highly likely to be cheaper than buying it in store.

Essential Developmental Aids for Your Kids

Nothing is more important to a child's development than the first few weeks, months and years of their life. A baby emerges from the womb a tabula rasa, and within five years their personality is almost fully formed. It's also in this time that learning and growth are happening at their fastest.

As adults, we're used to the world staying relatively stable. We stopped growing (upwards at least) a long time ago. And the world is not the wonderland it once was. But for children, the world can be dazzling. Nearly everything is intense and exciting. That's why it's so important to provide them with the right learning materials to get the most out of this crucial stage in their development.

Sensory Materials

The ability of children to manipulate their environment is key to their long-term success in navigating the world. Although it may look like not much is going on when kids play with blocks, geometric shapes or textured touch tablets, their brains are fizzing. Playing with, and manipulating physical objects with different physical sensations is crucial. It allows them to gauge how hard they can grip. It gives them a sense of the relative weights of different objects so that they can form muscle memory. And it allows them to work out which shapes fit together and which don't - important abstract reasoning skills.

There are also sensory materials - if you don't mind listening to banging all day long in the house - for sound. Different tins with different pitches can help children to improve their perception of pitch and tone

Math Materials

You probably have bad memories of math at school. But I bet when you were very young, you loved it. Children are often drawn to maths and logic. I think this is because it is something that they can master. But then something happens and their interest wanes.

But doing math, or so goes the old adage, can be fun. There are all sorts of montessori materials for helping children to get a grasp of the basic concepts. What about learning how to do long division with beads? How about a snake game that teaches you subtraction at the same time? There's even help for doing the dreaded fractions.

Get Them Interested In Biology

Do you remember how interesting it was when you first found out that honey bees made all the plants grow? I do. It sort of amazed me that the whole world literally depended on a little insect, looking for nectar.

Learning materials don't just have to be an abstract concept. They can also teach you about important facts out there in nature. How much better is it to build a jigsaw of the life of a butterfly than to read it in a textbook? Building a butterfly jigsaw puzzle with a story behind it integrates all of a child's senses. They have to touch, look and listen to what they're learning. When it all comes together, which it will, they'll be more likely to apply what they've learnt to their own life. And when it comes to learning, that's what matters.

Parenting Tips: How To Keep Your Home Safe

It’s very important that you and your family are living in a safe home. Especially if you have young children. For a young child, the home can be something of a battleground. There’re lots of ways they can get hurt around the house. So, you must take the necessary measures to keep your home safe. Today, I’m going to talk you through some things that can cause problems in the home, and how you can sort them out.

Stairs can pose a big danger to you and the people in your home. They’re especially dangerous when your children are at a young age. You can’t have them playing on the stairs, if they fall, it could be very bad indeed. Even when they get older, stairs can still be a danger. There’s always the slight risk that someone will fall down the stairs. To counter this, make sure your stairs aren’t slippery. Some laminate stars can be slippery if you’re wearing socks. Luckily, you can get some tape that is stuck on the stairs to give them more grip. For those of you with young children, I recommend getting a stair gate. You fix gates at the top and bottom of your stairs, stopping your kids from playing on them. A quick fix that keeps the home safe.

Termites are little insects that can cause so many problems to your family home. They look a bit like ants, but they’re very different. There are so many types of termites that are usually found in homes. Some of them look different to others, but they all do the same thing. Termites will infest all the wooden parts of your home. If you get a termite infestation, it can be very problematic. They can eat through wood and cause things to break and collapse. They can eat through a wooden chair leg and weaken it. If one of your kids sits on that chair, it could easily break, and they hurt themselves. Although termites don’t bite humans, they can still pose a threat. As such, it’s important you take care of them. Your best cause of action is to call a pest control company as soon as you detect them in your home. They’ll apply some different methods to help get rid of all the termites.

Believe it or not but water can be dangerous. Of course, it’s essential that you and your family are drinking lots of water a day to stay healthy! But, water spillages can be harmful to your family. If someone spills water on the floor, it turns the place into a danger zone. Anyone can slip on that water and hurt themselves. Likewise, a stray splash of water, in the kitchen, can easily land in a plug socket and cause a major issue. The easy solution here is to be more careful whenever you’re using water. You could also consider getting some socket covers for any plug sockets near taps.

These three things can cause problems in your home, especially when left unsolved. Use my advice and you'll soon have a safer house.
